GENERAL POKER STRATEGY - SEMI-BLUFFING
A Semi-bluff differs from a straight bluff in that, if you are called, you still have some chances to win. In a straight bluff, if you are called, you are almost certain to lose. Normally, with a Semi-bluff, if there are more cards to come, some of those cards may give you a winning hand; whereas, in a straight bluff, if you are called, there are normally no cards that will win for you.
For the following reasons there is a special advantage to using a Sem-bluff more frequently than a a straight bluff:
1. As you estimate, with a straight bluff, you will lose close to 100% of the times you are called, in most cases, you can beat very few hands and are hoping for folds.
2. With a Semi-bluff, you will win when everyone folds. If called, you still have some outs that can win a percentage of the time. Your winnings should increase and you will feel a little better when someone calls you, since you are generally not drawing dead.
So whenever possible, when you feel the need to bluff, try to increase the number of Semi-bluffs in relation to just straight bluffs, it should help increase your earnings.
