The Importance of Poker Literature and Book Reviews
POKER BOOK REVIEWS PART I

Texas Hold ‘em for Advanced Players
Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players
Tournament poker for Advanced Players
High-Low Split for Advanced Players

David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth team up to write the advanced series of books on poker.  Respected player Ray Zee is also involved in the Seven Card Stud and High-Low Split volumes of the series.  Each work represents the masterwork on the particular form of poker.  It would be doing a great disservice to your game to not read the book an every form of poker that you regularly play.

Due to the widespread popularity of the game Texas Hold ’em this is the book that most players will read first.  It  will teach you how to progress from a novice to a skilled player.  Sklansky and Malmuth cover most topics necessary for winning play including pre-flop play, the check-raise, and play in loose or short handed games.  This is another book that needs to be read and reread before all of the concepts can be grasped.  Many concepts are complex and to be understood will need to be thought about as well as applied at the table.  This is the book on Texas Hold ‘em and should be read by every serious player.

The Seven Card Stud, Tournament, and High-Low Split volumes in the advanced series of books are equally as good, but not as popular due to the dwindling appeal of games other than Texas Hold ‘em.  They are however, required reading for anyone who takes these variations of poker seriously.  Ray Zee collaborates with Sklansky and Malmuth on the Seven Card Stud volume and it is excellent.  There are many concepts that are counter intuitive that are essential for strong stud play.  Stud is a highly complex game that is difficult to write about due to the situational nature of the game and the countless situations that this variation presents.  Seven Card Stud for Advanced Players covers many of these situations and the concepts involved with playing Seven Card Stud at a high level better than any other book an the market.

The High-Low split volume is written exclusively by Ray Zee and is another masterpiece.  It is split into two sections, one on Seven Stud Eight or Better and one on Omaha Eight or Better.  While these games are rarely spread in live casinos there are many games found online and they are a nice change of pace for players looking to mix up their routines.

David Sklansky writes the tournament volume of the advanced series and again comes through with a solid winner.  He deals with the gap concept, the changing value of chips, and the fact that people do not want to go broke in great detail.  This book deals with the many differences between cash games and tournament poker and should ease the transition between the two.

New players should not be scared away from these books and worry that they are too advanced for them.  Although they deal with many complex topics they are clearly written and will help players of all abilities improve.  They are not always an easy read, and many subjects will have to be reread many times to be fully understood but this is part of the learning process.  These are the best books written on their particular form of poker and should be among the first books read by players who understand the basics of the game and are looking to improve to the next level.

Small Stakes Hold ‘em by Ed Miller, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth

This book is the defining text on beating small stakes games for the maximum amount of money.  Although it targets lower stakes players it should not be confused with being a book only for beginners.  It covers many sophisticated topics in a clear easy to understand way (as easy as a difficult topic can be to understand anyways).

The chapters on gambling theory and equity are extremely important and not covered in many other books.  Many experienced players who play at higher stakes will benefit from understanding these concepts.  This book is specifically tailored for today’s game, the age of the internet.  It teaches players how to perform in the loose games that are so common online, especially at the lower limits.

All players should benefit from reading this book, as it covers many topics that apply to higher stakes games as well.  There will also be times when a higher limit game has the characteristics of a small stakes game and one should know how to adjust to get the maximum value.  Many players are hampered because they have progressed past the lower limits without understanding key concepts that are important for maximum profit.  This book covers many of these concepts that other authors have neglected.

This is one of the best books to teach a player who understands the structure and basics of the game how to excel and win at the smaller stakes games.  The internet has changed the way poker is played and what games are profitable.  No longer must a player play higher stakes to make a profit or even earn a living.  With the advent of multi-table play one can earn a living even in the smaller online games.  This is the book that will teach you how to do it.
