GENERAL POKER STRATEGY - Estimating YOUR Opponents

When you try to estimate your opponents skills, never underestimate them, especially if you do it to boost your ego. As a good poker player, your ego should not need boosting, if it does, do not play until your ego is under control, and if it never is, maybe this is not the game for you.

If you are a male, especially do not ever underestimate a female player. Some of the World's best players are women, i.e. Jennifer Harman, Annie Duke, etc., and it would pay you to respect their play.

One of the most interesting examples of underestimating a female opponent was in a televised World Poker Tour headsup contest between Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth for two million dollars, Winner take all. Annie played expert poker, but more importantly, she coyly played with Phil's mind by letting him think she was not playing that well. That, coupled with a few big losses, soon had Phil talking to himself, as he tends to do when he's on tilt. He was completely frustrated with himself for underestimating Annie Duke's play. She played him, and her hand, like a Stradivarius violin. Needless to say, it was not long before Annie walked off stage with a demure smile and a cool two million dollars.

So if you are going to estimate your opponents skills, try not to underestimate them.
