The Edge Software - DOCUMENTATION

This documentation and the program it explains are both private property. If you have come across this information or the program from a source other than The Edge web site, you are using an unauthorized copy. Please notify Gary Steele at the contact information above to report the unauthorized availability.

The Edge Documentation

• Installing ‘The Edge’ •

The Edge comes with the following three files:

Setup.EXE

Setup.LST

TheEdge.ZIP

Move all three files into the same folder, such as C:/TEMP. Click on the Setup.EXE program. This will launch the Install program. After installation there will be a Start menu path to reach the program:

Start/Programs/

If you click on the program and it tells you the database is not found, you will need to locate a file called ‘TheEdgeData.mdb’ and copy it into the folder which contains the program called ‘TheEdge.EXE’ (most likely in C:/Program Files/TheEdge). The installer should do this for you, but not all computers are the same and a few have been known to change the location of some of the information.

If you click on ‘TheEdge’ and the program is not found you will need to do a search for the program called ‘TheEdge.exe’. nce you find the program it is easiest to just leave it where it is and create a shortcut to it on your desktop.

• Troubleshooting •

- There have been two frequently apparent technical issues with the software. Both have to do with Microsoft operating systems and updates. Microsoft has posted fixes on their site.

Try updating your MDAC files first by going to the following link and installing the software:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=
6c050fe3-c795-4b7d-b037-185d0506396c&DisplayLang=en

If you receive the message “Setup cannot continue because some system files are out of date on your system” you will need to check out Microsoft’s fix for the problem at:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;191096

• Setting Up ‘The Edge’ •

When you initially click the program the following screen appears:

Steps:

1. Click ‘Change Window Name’ in the menu – this will bring up a box asking you for the name of the table you are playing poker at. Type the first few letters of the table name (typically ‘Card Table 1234’, but ‘card’ will work for this purpose) and click OK. This tells the program which window to keep on top.

2. Center your window in the middle of the screen so you can see all of the buttons associated with each seat around the outside of the table. The program was written at a screen setting of 1024x768.

3. Click on the words ‘Player 1’.This tells the program you are assigning a player to that seat. If this is the first time you have seen this player type their name in the ‘PlayerName’ box and click ‘Add This New Player To File. ’This will automatically move the player’s information to the chosen seat. If you already have stats for this player, find their name in the drop down box, click on their name, and click the ‘Move This Data To Seat’ button.

4. Follow the instructions in step 3 for all of the players around the table.

Any empty seat or player sitting out should be marked ‘Out’ by checking the ‘Out’ box. This will prevent hands from accumulating for those seats.

• Keeping Track •

While the game is being played, you want to track each player’s pre-flop tendencies. You can use this information in many ways to improve your game play. Your screen should now look like this once you have all 10 players set up:

Each time a new hand starts, click the ‘New Hand’ button. This will accumulate one hand for every player at the table not marked as being ‘Out.’

Each time a player folds before the flop, click the ‘Fold’ button next to that player’s name. This adds one to the player’s fold total.

If you have to subtract one from either the fold or hands totals, simply click on the word ‘fold’ or ‘hands’ next to the total and it will be adjusted down one. Note: do not set the hands total to 0, this will cause an error when calculating the percent.

After 10 hands, a player’s ‘Fold’ button may turn Red or Green. A Red button will show for players who fold more than 60% of the time (watch out if they are in the hand). A Green button means the player folds less than 40% of the time (find as many as possible).

• Saving Player Stats •

There are two times you will want to save player stats:

A player leaves the table. When this happens, click the players name and then click the ‘Update Stats For Player’ button. This will move the information to your files for use next time you see this player.  When you have updated, mark the seat out and Reset the data for this seat by clicking ‘Reset.’ The seat is now ready for the next player.

You leave the table. When this happens, click on any player’s name and then click the ‘Update Stats For All Players’ button. This moves everyone’s information to your files. You can then click ‘Reset All’ in the screen menu to set everyone back to zero and begin setting up your next table.

• Other Stuff •

You can take notes in the notes box for a player and save those to your file by clicking ‘Update Stats For Player’.

There is a light blue box above the ‘New Hands’ button. This is a time stamp. When you click it, the time inside it will be updated with the current time. This helps you keep track of your time at the table.

Clicking anywhere in the green will bring your poker screen back up to the front. Clicking a player name will make the poker screen disappear into the background.

If you minimize the screen it will not automatically reappear. You will have to click on the window in your taskbar.

There is lots of basic help information in the Help Menu on the menu bar. Take a quick look there if you ever get lost or confused.

• FAQ •

1. Shouldn’t I be spending time watching players and learning their tendencies to improve my game instead of using software?

Of course you should. Observing other players is one of the most important lessons in poker. The Edge is not made to take the place of experience, skill, and patience. The Edge is an important tool for you to track players and be able to bring their statistics and notes up once again when you see them. It does not replace your skill; it simply provides you with useful information which can be retrieved for later use. The more information you have, the more you win and the less you lose.

2. Are there any problems associated with installation?

The Edge uses Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 This programming language was designed to work with newer computers and operating systems. If you are using an older computer The Edge will work, but it may require some driver updates and perhaps some system tweaks. Links to both new drivers and system changes are available in the documentation.

3. I keep getting the following error: “Run-time error ‘5’: Invalid procedure call or argument”

The window name you are attempting to use is incorrect. The name of the window the program is asking for is typically the name the poker table. This is usually found on the blue bar at the top of your window’s screen. If you are playing at a poker table called “Roller Coaster” (http://www.theedgepoker.com/Screen-600.jpg) you could simply type the word “roller” in the window name. If you are playing at a table called “Table 1234”, the word “table” would work for the window name.
