The Edge Software - how it works
The Edge poker program takes some time to set up before you enter each poker game because there is no way to directly interact with the poker software you use. The security is too tight and if you did figure out how to read the data packets, it would probably be illegal. For this reason, all of the data is kept on your hard drive in an Access database. This poker statistics software cannot be traced by the poker site or other users because it all resides on your computer, however, if you brought anything like The Edge into a real casino they would quickly show you the door.

Each time you sit down at a new table you have to tell the poker stat gathering program who is sitting in each seat. This usually takes about two minutes for 10 players, but can be done in between folds while you are playing poker or while waiting for the big blind to reach you. This may mean looking up players you already have stats for from the past or adding a new poker player to your statistics database. If you are at a table with someone you have seen before, you can quickly bring their preflop poker stats in from all previous times you played against them. Once the table is set up, the program gets much easier to use.
The concept of the program is very simple. At the start of each poker hand, you click the ‘New Hand’ button. This adds one hand to each poker player not sitting 'out' at the table. Each time a player folds before the flop, you click the ‘Fold’ button next to their name. This adds one to that player's fold total. The percentage of preflop folds is automatically calculated as you play. Tight players to watch out for, those that fold over 60% of the time, have a red button making them easily identifyable. Loose players, those that fold less than 40% of the time, are quickly identified by their green button. Once you know the percentage of poker hands played for each person at the table, you can figure out the worst preflop hands this player will typically play. You would be amazed at how many people never fold preflop. When one of the players leaves the table, you simply update their stats for the next time you see them and get ready to add their replacement to the file.
You can also take notes on each poker player. Player A is a loose fish. Player B only bets when he has a great hand. Player C bluffs at every poker hand she stays in. Not only does all of this poker information immediately help you at the table you are currently playing (even with newly added players) but it also helps you the next time you see these players. Oh, don't forget to set up yourself in the file. The Edge is a great tool for tracking your own poker statistics. It quickly points out when you are playing too loose.
